The Financial Literacy Education Training Program
The Financial Literacy Education Training (FLET) currently conducted by the Microfinance Unit (MFU) of the National Centre for Small and Micro Enterprises development (NCSMED) was initiated by the Pacific Sustainable Livelihoods Programme (PSLP) of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
This training program resulted from a ‘financial literacy needs assessment’ carried out by UNDP/PSLP in parts of Viti Levu, Yasawa and Koro Island. The results showed that rural dwellers receive a steady flow of income from the sale of agricultural and marine products, lease money and remittances but do not have good money management skills to be able to improve their financial well being and meet basic familial/religious and social obligations. Many people indicated that they would like to be taught skills on how they could better manage their income and expenses and also to save money.
The result of this assessment was used to draft the FLET training materials and course design. A series of workshops were conducted whereby organizations that were actively involved in rural areas were asked to participate and contribute to the development of the training materials and methodology. These included the : Capital Markets Development Authority ( CMDA), Microfinance Unit, Department of Cooperatives, Fiji Credit Union League, Consumer Council of Fiji, Ministry of Multi Ethnic affairs, Fijian Affairs board and the Consumer council of Fiji.
This combined effort resulted in:
1. poster training materials for visual aid
2. training methodology tailored for rural communities
3. training workbook
Objective
The objective of the FLET training is to help participants become aware of their financial well being through examining their income and expenses and to enlighten one’s knowledge and skills in budgeting, saving and setting goals.
